Beachgrass Propagation with Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation

January 10, 2026

Partners from the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation (MCFN), Zuzek Inc. and the Long Point Biosphere Region (LPBR) gathered to assemble beachgrass micronurseries. Native beachgrass is essential for building healthy beaches, but is currently not available in sufficient quantities for most dune restoration projects. These micronurseries were planted with seed gathered from the Long Point National Wildlife Area under a permit from the Canadian Wildlife Service. Each micronursery consists of three trays of seeds planted in a customized growth medium, grow lights with timers, and a fan to provide air circulation and strengthen stems. Partners from MCFN, Zuzek Inc. and the LPBR are learning together in order to optimize beachgrass production for use in future restoration projects across the Great Lakes region.
